Critiques and Gallery 2nd Championship Show

11th September 2005
Judge: MRS JENNY SMITH - WILLOWSTAFF (UK)
.
My thanks to the Committee for the honour of judging the second of this Club’s Inaugural Championship Shows. This was my first overseas judging appointment, and it proved to be a wonderful experience. Overall I was very pleased with the quality of exhibits, and in particular my final line-ups, which I believe demonstrated animals of a type consistent with the attributes I was seeking. It was refreshing to observe that the undesirable, exaggerated heads so common in the UK were, with the exception of 2 or 3 bitches, absent. I was a little disappointed in the level of fitness of some of the bitches, however of more concern were the several instances of dentition problems ranging from flush bites, missing/misplaced canines, uneven bites, etc. Lack of attention to the problem now could well result in a potential time bomb in the future. My BIS was, in my opinion, an outstanding dog who I believe would trouble the best were he campaigned in the UK. My sincere thanks to the exhibitors for their enthusiastic and sportsmanlike acceptance of the results, and to my steward Ann, whose efficiency ensured the smooth-running of the ring. Congratulations to the Committee for all their hard work in achieving individual CC status, and subsequent organisation of an excellent weekend of shows at a super venue. I am sure the Club and its hard-working team will continue to go from strength to strength. On a final note, special thanks to my/our hosts Ernest Herbert and Neil & Shaz Brooks for their hospitality and friendship.

CLASS 1 – BABY PUPPY DOG – 8 (No Absentees)
.

1ST STEELE’s HELLFYRE THATS FOR SURE – Mahogany brindle/white front. Eye catching puppy of 3˝ months with a lovely head type, clean, straight front, good topline and balance. Moved out well for one so young. BABY IN SHOW – best of luck for the future.

2nd AUSTIN-CLEARY’s TYKABUL DICEY RILEY – Black & white of 3 months. Well defined head with dark, round eyes, neat ear carriage and good muzzle strength. Not quite the movement of 1, but another promising youngster at this point in time.

3rd LANE’s SANDTOYS ARSENAL - 5˝ months black/brindle. Another nice type of youngster who presented a clean outline when viewed in profile. Pleasing head shape with dark eyes and correct dentition. Slightly more rear angulation than 1 or 2, and front not quite as clean.

CLASS 2 – MINOR PUPPY DOG – 5 (1 Absent)
.
1ST SHAW’s BELLEDEN CROWN PRINCE - 7 months’ Red with white front and black mask. Head well defined, in balance with body and with good depth of under jaw. Front slightly pinched but should fill out with maturity. At this stage of development he is nicely balanced, not overdone and shows early promise. MINOR IN SHOW.

2nd LANE’s LANVILLA BLAK ON TRAK – Black/brindle of 8 months. A well balanced dog that lost out to 1 on front conformation. However, he has a good head shape with clean muzzle, correct dentition and neat ear carriage. Body of clean lines, short coupled and with adequate rear quarters. Moved well.

3rd BAMBACH & TATTERSALL’s STAFFBACH BULLET HOLE – Black/brindle of almost 8 months. Similar type of dog to 2, just slightly less lift and a shade stronger through. Head of good strength and definition, but muzzle not quite as clean.

SWANKY IAM BRUCE

1ST ROSS’ SWANKY IAM BRUCE – Mahogany/Brindle of 9 months. A puppy of the type I was looking for and in good condition. Clean, straight front. Head of good proportions with correct mouth and dark enough eyes. Ears a little flighty. Body, compact and well balanced with level top line. Lacks bend of stifle, however this was taken into consideration and his virtues gave him the edge in this class. BEST PUPPY DOG/OPPOSITE PUPPY IN SHOW.

2nd AUSTIN’s GUINNESTOCK STIR THE POT – 9 months Red/grizzle. Another nice type of dog in a similar mould to 1. Rear quarters better angulated, but not as clean off the front and slightly fleshier in muzzle. Good head, dark eyes, neat enough ear carriage, slightly long in coat.

3rd WRIGHT & HOPKINS’ SLAIDBURN WORKING CLASS MAN - 8˝ months Black/brindle. Head of good strength with dark eyes and correct mouth. A stronger type of dog than 1 or 2, who was not as clean in muzzle and heavier boned than I prefer.

.
CLASS 4 – JUNIOR DOG – 7 (1 Absent)
.

1st BYRNE & REID’s BINDATASH SON OF MAGIC – 12 months’ Black/brindle. A nice type of dog with just the right amount of lift, giving good overall balance. Head well proportioned, although prefer a fraction more width to muzzle. Correct dentition, dark eyes giving desired expression, ears a little flighty. Well angulated front and rear quarters, moved out well. Overall a promising young dog of the type I like.

2nd ROSS’ SWANKY FANCY THIS - 15˝ months – Black/brindle & White – Another dog of good balance, who is tidy all round and very sound on the move. Prefer slightly more lift and a shade darker eyes, however I liked him and this was a close decision with 1.

3rd BYRNE & REID’s CAIRFORD TELL NO LIES – 17 months – Mahogany brindle & white. Liked this dog when viewed front on. Head well defined with keen expression, dark eyes and clean muzzle. Front straight, clean and with sufficient lift. Lost out in respect of topline and rear angulation.

CLASS 5 – INTERMEDIATE DOG – 12 (1)
.

CH STAFFBACH BULLETPROOF

1ST BAMBACH/TATTERSALL’s CH STAFFBACH BULLETPROOF. A very tight decision between 1 & 2. Black/brindle in lovely, fit condition with short, gleaming coat. Excellent head with desired expression, correct length of muzzle and well developed cheek bumps. Slightly fleshier in muzzle than 2, but marginally cleaner off the front. Body balanced, well boned and not overdone. Moved positively with level topline and sound rear quarters, although prefer slightly less angulation. A quality dog who I considered for the RCC.

.
2ND SHAW’s CH BELLEDEN DEVIL OV ORION - White/brindle - Another excellent type of dog who possesses many of the attributes of 1 and could easily change places on another occasion. Head of superb proportions, body well balanced, in fit condition with good rear quarters and a sound mover. A quality dog that I liked very much.
.
3rd TIERNEY’s BELLEDEN ROCCO – Brindle/white – A very sound dog of many virtues, who again was presented in lovely condition with a gleaming coat. Not quite as clean overall as 1 or 2, but another nice type of dog. Note he is the litter brother of 2, congratulations to the breeders.
.
CLASS 10 – AUSTRALIAN BRED DOG – 14 (1)
.

1ST BYRNE & REID’s CH TANAROS SUPER GLIDE – Another close decision. Black/brindle of excellent type. Super head properties, clean and well defined. Good strength of under jaw, correct bite. Front straight (handler tends to stand him a fraction too wide on occasions, spoiling shoulder line), body balanced, fit and of clean lines. Well angulated rear quarters, movement good, although a little close behind. Overall a quality dog who fits the Standard like a glove. RESERVE CC & BEST AUSTRALIAN BRED IN SHOW – well done.

2nd LELLIOTT’s CH WILLSPRIDE FINNIGAN – White – another good quality dog possessing many of the virtues of 1. Slightly less lift and a fraction stronger through, however a fit, standard dog with excellent head and expression complemented by dark eyes and neat ears who moved well.

3rd McGINLEY’s WHATTASTAFF NICHOLAS CAGE – Brindle/white split face markings. More up on the leg than 1 or 2, but a well boned, athletic type of dog, who was in fit condition. Tends to be a shade straight in the stifle; a less stretched stance would improve rear profile.

CH KOENDIDDA UMRUM

1ST KOENDIDDA KENNELS’ CH KOENDIDDA UMRUM – White – A standard, dog of the highest quality who was in superb condition and a credit to his owners. Excellent head properties of correct ratio, and without exaggerations. Good overall balance, clean enough shoulder line, correct front and rear angulation with excellent muscle definition. A dog that oozed Stafford character and strode around the ring as if he owned it! Slightly less lift and a fraction stronger than I would normally go for, but his overall quality and superb movement was not to be denied. A pleasure to award CC & Best in Show. Congratulations.

2nd BROOKS’ WILLSPRIDE COCKNEY REBEL – Black/brindle – Top size, athletic specimen who had plenty of attitude and was on his toes throughout the class. Super, well defined head with correct muzzle to skull ratio and large white teeth. Clean front with plenty of lift, balanced but not as compact as 1. Correct front and rear quarters, good spring of rib and level top line held on the move. Unfortunate to meet 1 on such good form, but nevertheless a quality dog who deserved his placing in this competitive class.

3rd FAULKS’ CH BERLSTOCK EYES WIDE SHUT – Black/brindle who gave way to 1 & 2 in respect of cleanliness of head and front. However, he is a standard, compact dog with a lot to like about him. Head well shaped and of good strength with keen expression. Body balanced, well defined with sound rear quarters. Prefer less drop behind withers but overall a nice type of dog.

.
BITCHES
.
CLASS 1a – BABY PUPPY BITCH – 15 (5 Absent)
.

1ST MAVIN’s LOKSTOKNSTAF HOTPANTS – Almost 4 months - predominantly white. At this tender age she is of nice type and balance with a lovely head shape, level top line and well angulated rear quarters. A confident performance. Well done and good luck.

2ND SZIRER’s JEOLENA LOOK AT MEEE – Just over 3 months – Mahogany brindle & white. Another nice baby who was clean enough off the front and had good overall balance with sufficient head development for age. One slightly lazy ear, which I attributed to teething.

3RD STEELE’s HELLFYRE FOREIGN AFFAIR - 3˝ months - Mahogany brindle & white. A lovely youngster who is well put together with the cleanest of fronts and moved out well enough. Topline fell away slightly behind withers and I considered her marginally less well balanced overall than 1 & 2 at this point in time.

2ND LANE’s LANVILLA BLAK ’N DISGIS - 8 months Brindle – Another puppy of the correct type who was a shade stronger through and slightly over angulated in rear quarters. However, she has a lovely clean head with strong under jaw and muzzle, dark eyes, and is clean enough off the front.

3rd PRATT’s JODEN BLACK BESS – 6 months Black/brindle – My type of puppy. Just the right amount of development for age and slightly more lift than 1 or 2. Clean off the front, good head and balance. Unfortunately she has a canine missing, but of sufficient quality to secure this placing

.
CLASS 3a – PUPPY BITCH – 6 (0)
.

1ST ROSS’ SWANKY GROOVY WHITEDLITE – White of almost 10 months. A lovely bitch that I liked very much and who moved like a dream. Head well defined with good stop, dark round eyes and neat ears. Front straight, well boned and with enough lift. Good width to chest, neat feet, level top line. Prefer slightly more bend of stifle to complete the picture.

2ND BROOKS & OSBORNE’s PEPSTAFF GIVE IT TO ME – 10 months - Mahogany Brindle/ white front. Another promising youngster who had slightly less bone than 1. Head of good strength and in balance with body. Clean fronted, good balance, correct top line and rear angulation. A quality puppy that was a bit of a handful and played up on the move.

3RD BIRKELAND’s JAMELKUR BOWTIE BABE – 9 months Black/white – a shade longer cast than 2 and carrying puppy fat, but another of the correct type with many of the virtues of 1 & 2 and completing a trio of promising youngsters.

A very nice trio of bitches.

1ST AUSTIN-CLEARY’s TYKABUL HIGH MAINTENANCE – Predominantly White of almost 18 months. Slightly stronger through than 2. Eye catching youngster who possesses a head of good strength with dark eyes and neat ears giving typical expression. Front straight, well boned and with clean shoulder line. Well proportioned body with sound rear quarters. Moved out well enough – liked her. JUNIOR IN SHOW

2ND STANLEY’s TORAZOR CHARMED ONE – 15 months Brindle/white. Another quality specimen and a close decision. A lot to like about her – clean headed with good mouth, nice dark eyes and correct ear carriage. Not quite the strength of muzzle of 1, however very sound all round with good body properties and movement was marginally better than 1.

3RD HILL’s BAJED MISS BLACKBERRY CD - 16˝ months Brindle and a close decision between these 3 in a competitive class. Not quite as clean in muzzle as 1 or 2, but another nice type of bitch of good balance with good rear quarters. Didn’t move as well and not quite as clean fronted.

TYKABUL HIGH MAINTENANCE
.
CLASS 5a – INTERMEDIATE BITCH – 25 (4)
.

Three superb bitches with very little to separate them, who should all have an excellent future.

TITLESTAFF DARK ROSE

1ST JONES’ TITLESTAFF DARK ROSE – Mahogany brindle/white front. A quality bitch in her prime. Excellent condition, fit and athletic, short coupled and presenting a balanced outline. Head clean and well defined with dark round eyes giving wicked expression. Overall a balanced, athletic bitch who was sound on the move, and who lost out by a whisker to the CC winners – sure her day will come – good luck. INTERMEDIATE IN SHOW

2ND TERRY’s CHERABAH THDIVIL ‘N DISGIS – Black/brindle. Another super athletic, bitch of excellent type and in nice fit condition. Slightly less bone than 1st and not quite as strong headed. However she is a quality specimen who possesses the clean lines I prefer, and who is balanced throughout with excellent conformation and resultant good movement. A close decision - just preferred head type & ring presence of 1.

3RD BROOKS’ BROOKSHIRE THE MATRON – Brindle. A top size, athletic bitch of quality with the femininity and clean lines I prefer. Head of sufficient strength, clean lipped and in balance with body. Correct muzzle to skull ratio, sufficient stop, lovely expression enhanced by darkest of eyes and neat ears. Moved with drive. Could have been in slightly harder condition.

.
CLASS 10a – AUSTRALIAN BRED BITCH – 20 (3)
.

A strong class, however I noted several exhibits with mouth faults.

RAYONNOIRE CANNY BAIRN

1ST FRAZER’s RAYONNOIRE CANNY BAIRN – Black/brindle. A super quality specimen who presented a clean outline. Strong head of correct proportions with feminine expression. Mouth correct, muzzle of good strength but slightly lippy. Dark round eyes and neat ears completed the picture. Body short coupled with level top line. Moved out well enough on sound rear quarters. Surprised to discover she is only 11˝ months and therefore hope she doesn’t go too strong. A classy youngster who should have a promising career ahead of her.

2ND PATTERSON’s CH ATTOMOY FINN McCOOL – Brindle. Another top quality specimen and a very close decision. A shade less bone and less of her all round. Super clean head of correct proportions with good depth of under jaw. I marginally preferred her head type, but she didn’t quite have the top line of 1. Overall, a nicely balanced bitch with excellent rear quarters who at maturity is not overdone which is exactly as it should be.

3RD HOLAHAN’s LINWEST BITTER SWEET – Brindle/white – completing a trio of quality bitches. A standard, feminine bitch that is balanced and not overdone, with an attractive head and expression and reflecting many of the virtues of 1 & 2.

.
CLASS 11a – OPEN BITCH – 16 (2)
.

CH TUSKSTOCK ALL EYEZ ON ME

1ST OSBORNE’s CH TUSKSTOCK ALL EYEZ ON ME – Black/brindle white front. An extremely close decision between two excellent specimens. A beautiful bitch who caught my eye and who excels in head and front. Standard size, of good balance with the required lift and presenting a clean outline. Excellent head with broad, deep through skull and lovely feminine expression. Muzzle strong, clean and housing correct teeth. Straight front, well boned and just the right amount of lift. Backline level but prefer less fall away at croupe. Moved well. Unlucky to come up against a dog on such top form in the challenge for BIS. CHALLENGE CERTIFICATE & RUNNER UP BEST IN SHOW – Congratulations.
.
2ND STANLEY’s HIGHBOURNE PRECOCIOUS – Black/brindle & white. A very close decision, based on cleanliness of muzzle and my marginal preference for the head strength & expression of 1. However, I considered her a top quality specimen with many of the virtues of 1 and I liked her very much. Super, well defined head of sufficient strength, cleanest of fronts, body well proportioned and balanced throughout with correct front and rear angulation and resultant sound movement. RESERVE CHALLENGE CERTIFICATE – well done.
.
3RD SHAW’s CH BELLEDEN DE LA ROUGE – Red with black mask – completing a trio of super bitches. Stronger through than 1 and 2, with a wonderful head and expression, good strength of muzzle and under jaw. Not quite as compact overall as 1 & 2, and shoulder line not as clean. However she is a bitch you just can’t ignore, and her soundness and movement pushed 1 & 2 hard.
