Critiques and Gallery 3rd Championship Show

16th September 2006
Judge: MR MARTIN GRIMWOOD - STORMSTAFF (UK)
.
I would like to thank the committee and members for the opportunity of judging the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of Northern New South Wales Inc Championship Show. I had a most wonderful day judging and to be afforded the accolade of the record entry of 248 without duplicate entries was indeed an honour and is indicative of the hard work that the committee had done in promoting the show. I'm certain that the way the Club is run will ensure that this figure is beaten in the very near future. I also had an very enjoyable day on the Sunday chatting and discussing views with many of the exhibiters of the day before. Many thanks to all, may I reserve special thanks for those that brought their dogs on the Saturday and gave me a go. If I may be permitted to give a general opinion it would be this. I found many examples of converging canines. Far too many exhibits bottom canines tips were embedded into the upper gum. The frequency of these was the reason that I started to take notes after the judging of junior dog. Positively, many had a good breadth of space between left and right sided large molars. I found movement on the whole was good although some did not reach from the rear which gave a bobbing action when moved. With rear angulation, I like a dogs rear pads to toe or be very close to an imaginary vertical line drawn from the back of pelvis to the ground. At this position the rear pasterns should be vertical. There were one or two instances of over angulation on the rear giving little or no column of support to the body above, but on the whole this was in the minority. I managed to fill all places without greatly compromising my views in most cases and I honestly believe that the top dog and bitch on the day are at least the equal of anything that I have judged or seen in the UK. All placed dogs moved well enough, and only mentioned below if better than the norm.

.
CLASS 1 – BABY PUPPY DOG 7 ENTRIES
.

1). STANLEY'S STANBURY WIZARD OFOZ - Black brindle with white chest. Pleasing expression, tight and clean in the lip, dark eye, neat ears that he will grow into. Straight front and manages to get his back legs where they should be. This is what won him this class over second. Looking very nice for his age

2). Poulden's Valorous Bitova Crumbb - Brindle with white markings. Appearing more mature than the rest of this group and this was apparent in his movement which was probably the best of them. Already showing body definition. I think that he will mature into a strong type of dog

3). Brooks'/Gillespie's Onfire Mean Machine - Brindle with dab of white on chest. Not quite the head of !&2 as yet, skull a little less defined. Straight front but still a little soft in the rear.

STANBURY WIZARD OFOZ
.
CLASS 2 – MINOR PUPPY DOG – 11 ENTRIES
.
1). Birlkeland's JAMELKUR STREET LETHAL - A very very typical black brindle looking just right for his age. Not overdone in any way. Wonderful expression. Dark eye lips tight and clean covering correct bite. Neck flows well into withers and level topline Straight well angled front and rear. Moved with economy. Could definitely do with some ring craft training but that wasn't going to alter any placings by me today.

2). Wolf''s Ourgang Don`t Stop Me Now - Brindle dog who was close up on one. Possibly a stronger head than would be my ideal and this why he was pipped to the placing. Expression as good as one, possibly a neater ear. Forequarters straight and well boned. Drops into a correct picture of angulation when lifted front and rear. Moved smoothly

3). Drury/Roebigs' Beaurite Hit the Bullseye. Very nice topsized pied with nothing overdone.Beautful expression, no lippiness whatsoever. Level topline and gets his feet where they should be and stands foursquare. My type of dog and had he dropped more straight on the front , may well have moved up the placings

JAMELKUR STREET LETHAL
.
CLASS 3 – PUPPY DOG – 13 ENTRIES
.

LLACHAR ADAGIO DOLCE

Felt that this was a stronger class than the previous MP

1). McClelland's LLACHAR ADAGIO DOLCE - Standard black brindle with white chest, nothing overdone. Good expression provided by a very dark round eye, ample stop neat ears, clean tight lips covering a good bite. Legs straight with slight turn out at pasterns, neck flows well into withers and topline. Great level of fitness for his age shown by good body definition. Reasonably smooth short coat. Best puppy on day

2). Baker's Pennyflower Lil Bandit - Pushing first to the limit was a heavier type black brindle. Much of the above could be applied to this lad and all comments into the recorder were of the same ilk, purely pipped on personal preference to type and expression.

3). Osborne's Pepstaff Heard the Goss -Brindle dog looking more of a puppy than second. As one for type and standard height and weight. Seemingly less outgoing than 1 & 2 and may very well have improved his placing if he had been.

.
CLASS 4 – JUNIOR DOG – 11 ENTRIES
.

1). Lane's CH SANDTOYS ARSENAL - Quality standard black brindle. Good length of muzzle with lips tight and clean covering required bite. Neat well placed ears, used well and dark round eyes provide typical expression. Straight strong forequarters, up on pasterns with well padded feet. Well ribbed back with reasonable body definition. Smooth short coat. Rear legs correctly angulated and positioned. Would have preferred a greater degree of fitness, especially if he is to challenge the top dogs here today.
..
2). Trimble's Stoneheart Tomfoolery - Very flashy brindle with white chest who is very well balanced. Strong headed dog without exaggeration, Good length and depth of muzzle with ample stop. Dark eyes Strong straight forequarters and as above up on his toes. Excellent body properties showing tuck up and lightness of loin, easily spanable. Correct rear angulation. Preferred the cleaner muzzle of 1. Fitness a credit.
..
3). Taureg Kennels & Sawiris' Bloomstaff Van Bobby Dazzler - Black brindle with a lot to like about him, heavier type than my ideal. Typical expression provided by reasonably clean muzzle dark eye and neat ears. Head balanced to body. Tends to stand a bit wide in the front and I would possibly prefer a tad more rear angulation.
CH SANDTOYS ARSENAL

CLASS 5 – INTERMEDIATE DOG – 11 ENTRIES
.

MUDDYPAWS SONOFRUFUS

1). Gilbert's MUDDYPAWS SONOFRUFUS - Brindle with white chest and head markings. A strong headed dog but one which is in total balance with his body. Neat ears, dark eyes and good length and depth of muzzle. Strong straight forequarters that give the appearance of being able to take punishment. Up on his pasterns. Neck flows smoothly into withers and topline. Good spring of rib carried back, very reasonable body definition but if a bit more was worked off him it would complete and enhance the overall picture. Strong well angulated and positioned hindquarters gave the dog great support. Moved well and won this class by a considerable degree. A well put together dog who impressed me greatly and was considered strongly in the final line up.

.
2). Sammut's Seighford Wotsup Doc - Standard brindle dog. More of an old fashioned type of dog whose head maybe considered to lack definition today but is not without virtue. Reasonably dark eye, ears could be tidier. Straight front providing lift and width, good spring of rib, would prefer a better defined body. Neck flowed smoothly into level topline. Reasonable rear angulation and support.
.
3). Doobagg the Enforcer - Black brindle. Heavier type of dog than I would usually be looking for. Reasonable expression with dark eyes and neat ears. Wide front with deep brisket, well sprung ribs carried back, body definition could be improved upon.
.
CLASS 10 – AUSTRALIAN BRED DOG – 29 ENTRIES
.

MAMBOSTAFF RUSTY NAILS

1). Serhan's MAMBOSTAFF RUSTY NAILS - Extremely pleasing red dog with black mask, white waistcoat and feet. Head and body in spot on balance with each other. Wonderfully typical expression provided by his neat well placed and used ears, dark eyes and clean muzzle of correct proportions covering an excellent bite. Good width between left and right molars. Strong straight front, lift with width with brisket to elbow. Tends to splay a toe or two slightly. Neck flows smoothly into withers and topline. Ribs well sprung and carried back, close coupled. Correct rear angulation gets his back pads positioned correctly. Moved very efficiently. An impressive dog, best Australian bred and reserve best dog in show. I hope that he doesn`t grow on or bulk up any more than he is.
..
2). Walsh's Ch Kypajuka Son of a Crumbb - Another red with black mask with a shade more white markings. As with 1, very good pigmentation. Stronger type of dog than one and for what would be my personal preference. Not the cleanliness of front as the winner but the rest of him was impressive. Good expression with neat ears and round well placed eyes. Depth of brisket was a tad more than I would usually choose, being a bit lower than elbow. Level topline which he maintained on the move that was powerful and smooth. Hindquarters were well muscled up and correctly angulated.
.
3). Lelliot's Willspride Finnegan - Strongly made white dog who excels in head and front. Balanced head to body. Neat ears and round eyes provide typical expression. Strong straight front, well up on pasterns, well padded feet. Brisket to elbow, neck flows well through into topline. Well sprung ribs carried well back with reasonable body definition, Could be a shade fitter. Closer to a type that I prefer than 2 but tended to throw a rear leg inwards on occasion.
.
CLASS 11 – OPEN DOG – 24 ENTRIES
.

CH KOENDIDDA UMRUM

1). Koendidda Kennels KOENDIDDA UMRUM - A excellent white who would hold his own in any company. Standard says smooth coated well balanced of great strength for his size, muscular active and agile and he fits this to a tee. His temperament appears to be bold and fearless and the rest just follows on in the same manner without exaggeration. Head has width and depth. Typical expression provided by neat ears well used, dark round eyes, strong jaws and muzzle with tight clean lips covering impressive bite. Crested neck flows smoothly into withers and topline. Strong straight well angled forequarters. Brisket to elbow, well sprung ribs carried well back, body showing good definition with tuck up and waist. Well muscled hindquarters with good angulation gets his feet in a position to provide strong columns of support. Moves as well as he looks with the required economy of effort. His fitness and condition are an absolute credit to the breed. He was my best dog of the day.

2). Ross' Swanky Iam Bruce - Tiger brindle with white chest. Standard dog with a typical expression, correct length of muzzle and good dentition. Strong straight front with good shoulder placement, neck flows well into topline. Brisket to elbow. Impresses from above with a well sprung rib and a waist line to provide the required well defined body. Strong muscular hams and sound rear angulation get his back pads correctly positioned. Impressive dog.

3). Brooks' Willspride Cockney Rebel - Topsize black brindle who impressed on entering the ring. A type that is my preference. His expression is excellent provided by neat well placed ears and a dark eye. Strong muzzle without a hint of lippiness. Head balances to body. Good body definition with apparently correct rear angulation. Would possibly prefer a shade more width to his rear quarters and would definitely prefer to see him in a fitter condition. Moved well enough but not with a smoothness that I had expected of his build.

BITCHES
.
CLASS 1a – BABY PUPPY BITCH – 8 ENTRIES
.

1). Frazer's HIGHBOURNE MAKYBE DIVA - Black brindle with a nice typical expression, well placed ears already being used to her advantage. Tight clean lips. Straight in the forequarters. Body departments looking good for a bitch of this age. Best baby puppy in show

.2). Zammit's Mokuisha Beatrix Kiddo - Black brindle with white markings. Along the same lines as one but seemingly not quite as far on. Typical puppy just wanting to play.

3). Bambach /Tattersall`s Borstaff Catch a Cloud - Predominantly white pup of a stronger stature. Appearing to be a shade more mature than 1&2 but that may very well be her type. A nice trio of baby puppies.

HIGHBOURNE MAKYBE DIVA

.
CLASS 2a – MINOR PUPPY BITCH – 21 ENTRIES
.

JODEN TEMPTRESS

1). Roebig's JODEN TEMPTRESS - Extremely well put together brindle. Typical expression with neat well placed ears used to effect, dark round eyes that look straight ahead. Muzzle of good proportions with a tight clean lip covering good bite. Straight forequarters, up on pasterns. Already showing a spring of rib and decent body definition for her age. Coat reasonably close. Her well angulated hindquarters get rear pads correctly positioned. Impressive puppy. Best minor puppy in show and best puppy on day overall.

2). Wolf's Ourgang I Want it All - Another nice brindle who I thought was unlucky to meet one. Close up on winner and difficult to split. Head quarters along the same lines of 1 but to nitpick, not as neat in the ear. Body proportions as one along with the anqulation in the quarters.

3). Roebig's Cairford Dontunoitsmagic - Once again, another nice brindle who has much of the above going for her. At this stage maturity means such a lot, we don`t have a separate standard for puppies and giving a month or two can be asking a lot in some instances. I liked her and much of the above can be applied here, she made up a trio of very nice minor puppy bitches.

.
CLASS 3a – PUPPY BITCH – 17 ENTRIES
.

1). Roebig's ORAZZ TURRADH - Black brindle & white. Good expression, round dark eye, reasonably tidy ears. Muzzle of good proportions. Straight strong forequarters, feet could be a bit tidier. Brisket to elbow, well ribbed back, good body definition, light in the loin, rear angulation was correct. Coat texture short and close, a nice puppy of pleasing type.

2). Oldenburg's Staffyhaus Simply Black - Black brindle of the same type as 1. Typical expression, dark eyes and reasonably neat tidy ears. Good muzzle length with clean tight lips. Balanced bitch with correct angulation front and rear.1st appearing a little more mature at this stage.

.3). McCoy's Joden Wicked Game - Black brindle, Typical expression, muzzle strong without lippiness. Brisket to elbow. Neck flowed well into shoulders and topline, good angulation on all quarters.

ORAZZ TURRADH

.
CLASS 4a – JUNIOR BITCH – 21 ENTRIES
.

DREAMCATCHER ALILNAUGHTY

1). Carroll's DREAMCATCHER ALILNAUGHTY - Classy black brindle who appeared balanced from nose to tail. Well shaped head with typical expression provided by neat rose ears well placed and used. Dark round eyes looking straight ahead. Correctly proportioned muzzle and lips that were tight and clean. No sign of lippiness whatsoever. Good bite. Neck flowed smoothly into level topline which was retained on the move. Strong straight forequarters, up on pasterns neat feet with black nails. Good spring of rib carried back, would most definitely prefer a greater degree of fitness to give better body definition. When stood naturally she gets her rear pads correctly positioned. Handler is inclined to wrongly stretch these out - Best Junior in Show.

2). Hesselden's Dreamcatcher Smoko Girl - Brindle litter sister to 1. All that I have said into the recorder has been duplicated for this bitch including the degree of fitness. Handler stands this bitch to her advantage. I have nitpicked to split them and although eye colour may bear some relation to coat colour bitch 1 had a darker eye. I'm sure placings will alter many many times.

3). Harrison/Driscoll's Skybreaker Miss Galaxy - Black brindle with white waistcoat making up a trio of very nice juniors. Possibly more my type of bitch than 1&2. Balanced with clean lines throughout. Stands foresquare with strong straight forequarters, and well angulated hindquarters. Again a typical expression Very tight clean lips, dark eyes and reasonably neat ears. Neck flowed ell into topline which was level on the move. Splitting hairs to split all three, 1&2 were slightly more economical with their movement.

.
CLASS 5a – INTERMEDIATE BITCH – 21 ENTRIES
.

SWANKY GROOVY WHITEDLITE

1). Ross' SWANKY GROOVY WHITEDLITE - A very close decision between 1&2 nitpicking to split them. Predominantly white with attractive head split half black/white. A stronger type of bitch than my ideal. Strong headed bitch with good expression. Very pronounced cheek muscles. Reasonably neat ears used well, round dark eyes looking straight ahead. Strong muzzle housing a very impressive purposeful set of teeth with large canines set at good angles, all four points most definitely in view. It was this dentition that edged her position as reserve best bitch. Would have preferred a tighter lip. All quarters when lifted just drop exactly into position. Strong straight front, up on pasterns and good angulation at the rear gives excellent columns of support. Neck flowed smoothly through withers into topline and she moved economically. Well muscled but would prefer a shade more fitter would improve the overall picture. Best intermediate on the day. Reserve best bitch on the day by a whisker.

2). Morse's Lapwing Raunchy Rita - Tiger brindle and white. Closer to my preferred type than 1. Pipped by one on rear movement. Tidier in the ear and cleaner in lip than 1 so better expression, nothing untoward but not the dentition of 1. Lovely expression provided by dark round eyes, neat ears, lips tight and clean. Neck again flows smoothly through withers and topline. Feet naturally placed correctly. Good body definition with pronounced tuck up and waist.

3). Birkeland's Jamelkur Bowtie Babe - Black brindle with white waistcoat and feet. Good expression although ears could be a tad tidier. Smooth through from neck to topline. Was a shade down on pasterns and her white socks drew attention to this fact. Moved ok but could be fitter.

.
CLASS 10a – AUSTRALIAN BRED BITCH – 30 ENTRIES
.

WARBRED COPPERHEAD ROSE

1). Butcher's WARBRED COPPERHEAD ROSE - Extremely attractive strongly pigmented red with black mask and nails. Lovely expression. Neat ears well placed and used, dark round eyes looking forward. Good length to her muzzle with clean tight lips. Neck flows smoothly into shoulders and topline. Well ribbed back with reasonably good body definition. Strong straight forequarters and well angulated muscled hindquarters. Moved as good as she looked. Considered very strongly for reserve best bitch.

2). Lane's Cherabah Thdivil Ndisgis - Black brindle bitch whose fitness was a credit. Atractive typical expression, very dark eye good muzzle properties. Ears tending towards the half pricked rather than rose. Straight in the forequarters and well boned. Well ribbed back with good body definition. Well developed hindquarters that she tends to hold over wide when dropped but it didn't detract from her movement.

3). Lane's Ch Staffbach I Said So - Black brindle bitch who would be a smaller type than my ideal but still balanced and standard. Good expression, neat well placed ears, decent length of muzzle without lippiness. Neck flowed smoothly into topline. Straight front, brisket a shade lower than my ideal at elbow. Not as hard as 2.

.
CLASS 11a – OPEN BITCH – 20 ENTRIES
.

GR CH BELLEDEN DE LA ROUGE

1). Shaw's GR CH BELLEDEN DE LA ROUGE - Strongly pigmented very appealing upstanding red bitch. Neatest of well placed ears, round dark eyes looking straight ahead. Strong black muzzle covered with tight clean lips. Head well split and muscled, strong and clean without wrinkling, very pronounced cheek muscles. Straight and strong in the forequarters, neat feet well padded with nails as black as coal. Neck flowed smoothly into withers and topline. Coat is just what the standard asks for, as smooth short and close as you could get. Good spring of rib carried back, pronounced tuck up and waist give good body definition. Hindquarters are well muscled and correctly angulated. Four strong columns of support. Her movement is free powerful and economical and as sweet a mover as I`ve come across. An image of strength with finesse. A well deserved best bitch and best of breed.

.
2). Frazer's Rayonnoire Canny Bairn -Black brindle bitch of obvious quality. Good expression provided by neat well placed ears, reasonably dark eye, correct length of muzzle without lippiness. Stands naturally foresquare giving good columns of support to her body above. Good spring of rib carried back and showing a lightness in loin. Strong straight front, could be more up on her pasterns. Hindquarters correctly angulated.
.

3). Fry, Pleydell-Fry & Grundy's Ch Borstaff Bumblebee - Brindle with white chest. Slightly more daylight under her than 2, but would prefer a greater degree of fitness. Typical expression, dark eye, neat well placed ears, lips tight and clean. Well angulated front and rear, good spring of rib, reasonable tuck up but a smaller waist would improve body definition. Kept her topline on the move.
